At Significantly Higher Risk • About 85 percent of people with gall bladder cancer have a history of gallstones (cholelithiasis). Sometimes, although not often, the gall bladder becomes hardened (calcified) from repeated inflammation as gallstones are passed. People with this "porcelain gall bladder" have a higher risk of developing this cancer than do others. The typical patient with gall bladder cancer is an elderly woman with a history of gall bladder problems. At Slightly Higher Risk • Gallstone disease without a "porcelain gall bladder."
